About the Event

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund was established in 1985 and serves as a tribute to the work, values and ideals for which Dr. King devoted his life.  In keeping with the EOC tradition of uplifting and empowering youth and families, this scholarship provides financial support during four years of college for young people in Nassau County.  The scholarship creates leadership and development opportunities for disadvantaged young people who will return to the communities of Nassau County and contribute their skills in an effort to improve the quality of life for all of our people.

MLK college scholars are selected by their local Community Action Program for consideration by the EOC's Scholarship Fund Education Committee.  Awards are granted to qualified high school graduates from Community Action Programs in Roosevelt, Freeport, Glen Cove, Hempstead, Port Washington, Rockville Centre and Lakeview.  In order to qualify, a student must plan to attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

As an extension of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund, the High School Mentoring Program provides incentive awards to at-risk, high school students with financial needs who have demonstrated leadership ability and community service.  We congratulate youth who have participated in EOC's youth programs and are among the EOC County-Wide Youth Council.

Your attendance, journal participation, and community support for the EOC Annual Dinner Dance makes these scholarships possible. It shows your continued commitment to the young people of our community and the goals Dr. King worked to achieve.  Again, we thank you for your support and assistance in helping to make the "Dream" of a college education, a continuing reality.  All contributions, big and small, are needed and very much appreciated.
