Temporary Asistance to Needy Families (TANF)
The aim of Career Paths TANF Employment Services (CPTE) is to provide Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) and Safety Net Family recipients with the confidence, self-esteem and skills to get and keep a job that will move them along on their path towards self-sufficiency. Participants will gain valuable and marketable skills as well as acceptable work habits that will land them a job and give them their first step towards a career.
The CPTE department works in conjunction with the Nassau County DHHS to make a difference in the lives of public assistance recipient families in Nassau County. By participating in the Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County, Inc., Career Paths Services program, individuals receiving TANF and Safety Net benefits are able to meet the work activity requirements as mandated by the Nassau County Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS). The families in receipt of Federal and State public cash and Food Stamp assistance are directly referred to CPTE by DHHS Employment Unit workers. The families are in receipt of cash assistance through the federally funded TANF program and the New York State funded Safety Net program for families who are in need of public assistance beyond the 5-year limit.
The Career Paths program staff is comprised of professionals who have experience in human services, counseling, case management and workforce development and are capable of preparing the participants within the program for today’s workforce by evaluating individuals’ abilities, interests and personality characteristics to direct them into the job industry or occupation that would best suit them and the employer.
Utilizing the entire EOC network of programs and services, Career Paths seeks to assist and advocate on behalf of those disenfranchised and provides intensive case management, assessment of employment barriers, child care authorization, transportation assistance, career counseling, job readiness skills and workplace training providing families referred to the program with the necessary tools to move from welfare to workforce, becoming self-reliant.
