Displaced Homemakers Multi-Service Center
The Displaced Homemakers Program helps people back on the road to economic independence by providing counseling, placement, and support services they need to obtain regular employment. The services that the DHMC program provide gives individuals the opportunity to gain the confidence and self-sufficiency needed to live a full and productive life.
As part of the program, employment services are provided to clients who are seeking assistance with job readiness and employment. Interviewing techniques and resume writing are part of the employment program. A job bank is available for clients’ review, and counseling for career direction is given to each client. Appointments are made for employment interviews and resumes are faxed to prospective employers.
Displaced Homemakers may be women who are widowed, separated, divorced, victims of domestic violence, a woman whose husband has become disabled or a mother who is receiving public assistance and is reaching the limit of her grant. Displaced Homemakers may not have been in the work force for a number of years, but may have worked in the home providing unpaid services for family members.
You qualify as a displaced homemaker if:
- You must support yourself and/or your family members after widowhood, separation or divorce.
- You have a disabled spose and your spose was the main source of income.
- You are a single parent and at risk of losing your main source of income.
- You were the primary caregiver of your elderly parents and were dependent on their income.
- You are experienceing a domestic violence situation and must gain independence.
Job Readiness Program
As a displaced homemaker, you are encouraged to enroll in a program that is sensitive to your needs. At DHMC, you will be offered services which will help you to develop the necessary skills to make the transition from the home to the workplace.
- Business English Review
- This workshop will also enable you to construct letters and write efficiently
- Business Math Review
- A review of basic math which will offer you the opportunity to overcome Math Anxiety.
- Computer Training
- An Introduction to computers. Participants will learn to navigate through Microsoft Word for Windows and other Office software, including Excel and PowerPoint.
- Self Esteem & You
- A series of workshops that are designed to meet the many challenges that you may be faced with. Geared to help build or rebuild your self-esteem and to encourage a new way of thinking.

- Job Search Aids
- Occupational data supplied by the New York State Department of Labor is available to assist participants in their job search.
- Family Development
- Empowering families by helping them to set their own goals and develop a healthy interdepedence for services.
- Dressing for Success
- Pointers how to make a great impression for the job interview.
- Presenting Yourself to the World of Work
- An aid in the assessment and development of skills which could be translated into meaningful salaried work. Also addressed will be job search techniques, resume writing and role playing interview sessions.
